Chapter Four
"I learned that, over time, the case was forgotten," he admitted. There was a little bite to his tone - which was understandable. Harper knew what that felt like to watch the missing person case of her best friend essentially go down the drain, how it felt to see a town act like they didn't care anymore, and she was just the best friend.
She had no idea what that must have felt like as the parent.
âI also watched the team of police who worked on the case closely.â He leaned across the table. âA lot of evidence that I distinctly remember finding on the night Beth went missing wasn't reported by the officer who took my statement. There was a 'lack of evidence' when there shouldn't have been one, which let my daughter become a cold case, a face on the wall somewhere, an empty expression on a milk carton. I didnât want her to become that, and knowing that pieces of evidence just werenât where they were supposed to be after all this time led me to investigate the officers.â
Harper narrowed her eyes so hard that she could feel her forehead crease. âInvestigate?â
He nodded, then shrugged sheepishly. "Truthfully, it was more like a sad Nancy Drew kind of sleuthing. I would follow someone home, watch their habits, etc. Everyone seemed normal, but there was one officer who had a weird routine. I followed him around more, and I noticed he left the house a lot."
Harper's heartbeat quickened. It felt like she was so close to a lead after so long, finally able to at least see a picture of who took her best friend. She had dreamed of this day for so long that she was even a little afraid she was making this up. Maybe she was asleep somewhere; maybe she was still dreaming in the hospital.
âWho was he, sir?â
"I know it's a sensitive issue," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "I know that you're all, like, supposed to have a blue shield kind of thing going on. I thought that maybe at the end of the day, there would be a reason for you to suspect that I was lying, perhaps. But I know you loved Beth. I know you want her to have justice as much as I did, and that's why I wanted to only talk to you. You'd have to take my word for it."
Harper nodded.
"The officer isâ"
The door swung open.
